Florida no-fault auto insurance law
TALLAHASSEE - Ending months of furious politicking, the Florida Legislature on Friday defied big insurance companies and agreed to revive and revamp the state's no-fault auto insurance law.

The swift and lopsided votes in the House and Senate belied the tumultuous negotiations between legislators and staffers who worked through Thursday night and into Friday morning to end a legislative fight with heavy implications for insurance companies, trial attorneys and hospitals.

Under the compromise, PIP, the mandatory $10,000 in personal-injury protection coverage that each Florida motorist must carry, would return Jan. 1, 2008, with new features intended to combat fraud and abuse.
